Star-studded Suva eyes Digicel Cup crown

The Suva rugby team is desperate to claim their spot back at the top of provincial rugby.

They have named a strong squad for the kick off of the Digicel Cup this weekend including two Fiji Bati 2008 World Cup players.

Saula Qalomai, Alifoso Yalayalatabua, Jeke Lalai, Leona Nakarawa, Napolioni Naulia, Tevita Tuiloa, Aminiasi Nava, Waqabaca Kotobalavu and Dale Tonawai are big names that boost Suva’s forward pack while Savenaca Koroi and Nemani Suguturaga switch codes from rugby league in the backline.

New coach, Flying Fijians rep and former Suva player Bill Gadolo is eyeing his first win in their opening game against Tavua at Garvey Park.

“This is an important season for us, we have a chance to restore pride back into our team,” Gadolo said.

“We have a strong squad but star players don’t mean anything if we cannot find the right combination.”

Suva  finished sixth in last year’s competition and failed to reach the semi final.

The capital city side six of their 11 games but this year, Gadolo wants to better the record.

“We have huge plans for the team but it all depends on the players and how committed they are to their training and the games.”

In other Digicel Cup fixtures this weekend, Northland takes on Navosa, Nadroga takes on Naitasiri, Lautoka versus Rewa, Namosi plays Ovalau and Nadi will meet Tailevu.
