![]() Fiji beats Kenya to face hosts in quarters March 21, 2010
Fiji followed up with their impressive 40-0 win over PNG to hold off a spirited Kenyan side 21-7 to register as second runner-up in their pool behind World champions Wales. The Iliesa Tanivula coached side will now take on Australia in the second cup quarterfinals at the Adelaide 7s. Hosts Australia clinched their place in the Cup quarters as pool winners with a ruthless 36-0 win against USA and then a thrilling 17-12 win against England. While the English could not recover from their opening day loss against Cup qualifiers USA, and dropped to the Bowl competition, Fiji did bounce back from their opening defeat against Wales to win their remaining matches and proceed with the Welsh to the last eight, at the expense of Kenya. Six tries by newcomer Sampie Mastriet helped defending champions South Africa to top their pool by drawing at the death against impressive Samoa, while Mikaele Pesamino has scorched over for eight tries so far for the islanders, the leading mark in the competition. Series leaders New Zealand also made serene progress, winning all three of their matches for the concession of just one try, in their 47-7 victory against closest pool rivals Argentina.
