Fiji eyes top of the Series table
February 07, 2010

Fiji will need to win the San Diego 7s next week to overtake current leaders New Zealand in the 2009/10 World IRB 7s Series standings.

After their Wellington 7s win last night, the Iliesa Tanivula-coached side are in second spot with 60 points, just four points behind New Zealand who have 64 points.

“The boys are happy, I am happy. This is what we aimed to do for this leg, try and get at the table leaders New Zealand before it was too late in the Series,” Tanivula said.

“Onus is now on the boys to remain consistent and ensure that our 60 points is not in vain. We have a better chance now then ever to displace New Zealand and we need to do that in San Diego.”

Samoa is in third spot with 46 points and England in fourth with 44 points.

“It’s not impossible, we can take the lead in the Series but we need to ensure we stay in the lead. The only team standing in our way now is New Zealand,” Tanivula said.

South Africa, the defending Series champions, is in seventh spot with 24 points.

The San Diego 7s kicks off next Saturday.
