Suva wins inaugural 7s carnival
November 07, 2009

Captain courageous James Brown was the toast for his Suva I side when he scored the match winner in their pulsating 31-29 Suva 7s Rugby carnival final win over a strong Ratu Filise outfit.

The University of the South Pacific first year student collected a well timed pass from playmaker Orisi Burekalou on the flanks and beat the cover defence with a sudden turn of pace for a try in the corner flag whilst his team was trailing 26-29 just seconds from time.

Brown and his band of merry men disposed off a strong Army FTG side 24-14 in the semi-finals to book a final showdown with a Rugby League outfitted Ratu Filise side.

The Namatakula based side edged Dale Tonawai’s Army I side 14-10 in the semis and looked as the hot favourites in the two-day meet after some impressive performances at the TFL Stadium.

Suva received $5,000 for winning the tournament.

Meanwhile the top team's that had current and former national reps were bundled out in either elimination or in the quarterfinals.

In the last eight Army One beat Police Bure 26-5, Ratu Filise defeated PWD Bure 26-0, Wardens One lost to Army 3 FTG by 19-24 and Suva One beat Rau Faith 21-5.

Team's like Red Rock, Nabua, Nasinu and Waimanu didn’t make it past the first elimination stages of the meet.
