Tough competition expected in Suva 7s
November 04, 2009

Top teams have confirmed their participation in the Suva Rugby Union 7s tournament to be held this weekend at the TFL Stadium.

Tournament organiser and Suva Rugby Union chairman Vilikesa Rauca confirmed teams like Warden, Redrock, Waimanu, Ratu Filise, Nadroga’s Sandhill, Army and host club Suva will be the teams to beat in the first tournament of the Series.

“Everyone’s looking forward to watching good, quality 7s rugby on Friday,” Rauca said.

“Having these big teams confirmed is a big boost for the kick off of the Series. The organisers have been working endlessly to get this kicked off and we are all excited to see our hard work paid off finally.”

The Suva 7s is supposed to field 64 teams but Rauca said this number might change after today.

“We are still waiting on some teams to pay their registrations, tomorrow we can confirm the total number of teams and the pools.”

The Fiji 7s squad will not field a team in the Series but Rauca said players have been released to play in their respective clubs.

“I know Warden will have Setefano Cakau, Pio Tuiwai, Seremaia Burotu and Lepani Nabuliwaqa – this is a club competition and while we may want to field a Fiji Barbarians team, it goes against the rules of the Series,” Rauca said.

Iliavi Satala is expected to boost the Army team while Etonia Naba and Emosi Vucago will spearhead Nadroga’s Sandhill team.

Suva under the guidance of Kalisto Tunaulu will have the services of Patrick Osbourne, James Brown, Peni Rokodiva and Osea Kolinisau.

The Suva 7s kicks off on Friday morning.
