The Davetalevu 7s team finished runners up in the Borneo 7s in Malaysia over the weekend, losing to Malaysian club, Negeri Sembilan Wanderers 10-7 in the final.
The Peni Rokodiva-led side returns home today but not without some worthy lessons.
Coach Aisea Tuilevu said the players had appreciated the exposure, a big boost to their campaign for a spot in the 15-member team to the first leg of the 2009/10 IRB World 7s Series in December.
“The whole purpose of this trip was for exposure, get them into game mode and into the atmosphere of competition,” he said.
“We took several new players who benefited more then anyone else in the team because it gave them a taste of international rugby.”
Fiji 7s coach Iliesa Tanivula was delighted with the feedback from Tuilevu saying it wasn’t results that mattered but accomplishing the purpose of the trip.
“Getting to the final was a big ask for the team, they had several new players and for that result I take my hats off to them,” he said.
“I am looking forward to sitting down with them and talking to them about their experiences. I know this trip has helped them mature as an individual but more as a player.”
The Davetalevu team will join the Fiji 7s squad tomorrow after they fly in to prepare for the Suva 7s this weekend.
