Baby Flying Fijians skippers move on
November 02, 2009

After guiding their respective teams successfully against Tonga in the first ever Kaji rugby test series, the Fiji U12 and U14 captains are looking forward to their playing career with a lot of optimism.

U12 captain Filimoni Savou, the son of former sevens coach and player Josateki Savou dreams of donning the national jumper in both codes and is adamant of excelling in the sport which he holds close to his chest.

The class 7 student of Veiuto Primary School in Suva has been representing the district from the Under 10 level and sees the experience of representing and captaining the U12 side as a stepping stone.

“I was really honored to captain the U12 national team against Tonga and ensured we worked hard in both games to record wins.”

“This was the first Fiji U12 team and we had planned to start off the test with a win and we were able to achieve this but the second game as expected was tough but we managed to pull that one out of the fire too.”

The centre looks up to his dad for guidance and encouragement and this was evident last Saturday at the TFL National Stadium as Savou watched his son from the sideline and gave his instructions and tips during the break.

Savou puts on his track shoes this week and will be running in the short distance race for Suva in the Chow Games.

For U14 skipper Ratu Marika Toroca, the opportunity to lead his country in rugby will be something he will cherish for the reminder of his life.

The soft spoken Bau native was selected for national duties after shining for Tailevu South in the primary schools competitions.

The class 8 student of Bau District School who sees All Black winger Sitiveni Sivivatu as his idol was one player his teammates heavily relied on to secure possession from line outs and rucks.

The lanky lock who is very shy and reserved outside the field of play is one of the most hardworking and vocal players on the field and leads his teammates by example.

Toroca is eying to don the Tailevu jumper in the near future wants to secure a rugby contract overseas and represent the Flying Fijians in 2015 Rugby World Cup.

The Uprising Beach Resort Fiji U12 side beat Tonga 17-7 and 5-3 while the U14 side outclassed the Junior Ikale Tahi 29-3 and 20-0 respectively.
