Pool C, South Africa 26-5 Japan:Despite a late try from Japan, (Alisi Tupuailei) the South Africans open there RWC Sevens with a win. Paul Treu will be concerned that try-scorer Gio Aplon limped out, we will wait to see the extent of his injury. For Japan they performed well and will be looking to take that into their next match against the Scottish.

Pool C, South Africa 19-0 Japan: South Africa started strongly, with three well taken tries. Japan are working hard, they will hope to break down the South African defence in the second half.

Fiji 26-10 Georgia

Fiji's Filimone Delasau, Neumi Nanuku and Napolioni Nalaga on score board ahead of Georgia at full time. Georgia also hit back with two unconverted tries

Pool B, Fiji 26-10 Georgia: No surprise in the end, the Georgian team came close and pushed for the win. Fiji with two second half scores, through run-ins from Delasua and Rokodiva.

Pool B, Fiji 12-10 Georgia: There could be a surprise on the cards in this one, reigning world champions Fiji are being made to work by Georgia. Fiji did join that elite list of team's past the 1000 point mark early on in the first-half.

New Zealand 42-0 Italy

New Zealand out for first win with tries from Fijians Viliame Waqaseduadua (2) and Lote Raikabula, Paul Grant, skipper DJ Forbes and Chad Tuoro. Ht NZ 21-0 Italy.

Pool A, New Zealand 42-0 Italy: New Zealand match the English points scoring, but deny Italy a point as well. Italy battled hard, but they were up against a team that look well prepared and raring to go. Viliame Waqaseduadua finishes off that one with two tries.

Pool A, New Zealand 21-0 Italy: A brave start from the Italian's, but not brave enough to stop the New Zealand team. Three tries take them past 1000 points in RWC Sevens tournaments. Paul Grant was the man with the historic try. Worryingly for the other teams, the Kiwi's have settled very well.

19:54: Up next is New Zealand vs Italy. This will be a tough test for Gordon Tiejens' team, as they look to repeat the New Zealand success of 2001.

England 42-5 Hong Kong

England beats Hong Kong with five tries. Tom Biggs, speedy Tom Varndell (2), a brace to Ben Gollings and one from Fijian Josh Drauniniu added tally for England while Mark Goosen put Hong Kong on the sheet in the second minute.

Pool E, England 42-5 Hong Kong: An improved second half from England who ran away with it in the end. Tom Varndell opening his RWC Sevens account, and leading points scorer in IRB Sevens Ben Gollings with 22 points.
The Hong Kong side were spirited, and Mark Goosen will be delighted to get his team on the score board, in their tough opener.

Pool E, England 7-5 Hong Kong: So it's half-time and a slow start from the English.
An early Kevin Barrett yellow card allowed Hong Kong to open the scoring, through trainee pilot Mark Goosen. But England got back into the match with a Tom Biggs try. Gollings converted and England's lead is narrow.

19:28: The cheerleaders are exiting the pitch. All is ready for the action to restart. We are in for some fantastic Sevens in the second half of the evening, with the four top seeds in action.

19:23: Samoa have the best points difference, after their defeat of the Irish. England vs Hong Kong is next, it could be a high scoring match. The crowd is waiting with anticipation.

19:15: We have just experienced an Arab influenced opening ceremony. RWCL Chairman, Bernard Lapasset has officially opened the tournament.

Pool B, France 26 - 17 United States: A great comeback by France with three second half tries to the United States one. It's back to the drawing board for Al Caravelli's men. Their cause not helped by the sin-binning of Todd Clever.

Pool B, United States 10-7 France: France scored first though Rida Jaouher but the United States hit back with tries to Chris Wyles and Kevin Swiryn to lead at the break.

Samoa 35-5 Ireland

Pool D, Samoa 35-Ireland 5: Samoa stamped their class on this match with three tries to Rupena Levasa proving to strong for Jon Skurr's men of Ireland.

Argentina on par for Melrose Cup

USA 7s champion led by the legendary Santiago Comez Cora stamped their dominance in Dubai after a three try 19-7 victory against Uruguay.

Try scorers for Argentina Dino Tomas Caceres, Cora and Gonzalo Camacho while Uruguay skipper Ignacio Crosa saw a fulltime; Argentina 19-7 Uruguay.

Tonga shows how 7s is played

Tonga is the first South Sea islander to notch a win at the 2009 RWC 7s Cup in Dubai this morning.

It took them three minutes to score the first try against the hosts Arabian Gulf, when New Zealand-based Viliame Ma’afu summoned all strength down the tramline to lead 5-0.

England-based Mateo Malupo scored in referee’s time after seven minutes to put Tonga 12-0 at the break.

Tongan fly-half and Auckland-based Vaea Poteki extended the island kingdom’s lead to record their first win 19-0.

Tonga showed a little bit of Pacific rugby trademark with a scissors or back flip passing in the second half for their third try.

Fulltime: Tonga 19-0 Arabian Gulf.

Canada runs free against Scotland 33-14

Canada
enjoyed a one-way traffic running in five tries in the first half to outrun European neighbours Scotland in the second match.

Canada’s tries came from James Pritchard, Adam Kleeburger, Ciaram Hearn, Neil Meechan, and Dth Van Der Nerwe for a half time lead of 33-0.

Scotland hit back with a brace of tries from skipper Colin Gregor for 33-14 at fulltime.

Kenya records first World Cup 7s win

Welcome to the opening day of action at Rugby World Cup Sevens 2009!

It's the first day of the men's competition and we will be bringing you all the latest live actions as the day progresses.

There are 24 nations, 288 players and millions of fans converging at ‘The Sevens’ in Dubai for the fifth International Rugby World Cup 7s.

The atmosphere is electrifying as four years of preparation for the giants of rugby’s abbreviated code comes to an end-they are all here for war at the Emirates.

In less than two hours the Fiji 7s team to run into the Sevens Stadium as the defending champion with a heavy heart.

But first up are South African giants Tunisia and Kenya opening the tussle at ‘The Sevens.’

Kenya, among the tournament favourites after good outings at the ongoing IRB 7s Series had a rude awakening from Tunisia which scored the first try of the 2009 World 7s Cup through Abess Kherfanni in the 2nd minute-Tunisia 7-0 Kenya.

Kenya hit back upon restart with tries to 25-year-old Lavin Esego for (5-7) and Gibson Weru for a Kenya lead of 10-7 at halftime.

Weru hit a hat trick in the match with a double in the second spell and Ashioya adding to the score sheet for a comfortable 29-7 win over Tunisia.
