Bolabiu, Singh race for top Fiji award January 07, 2009
Fiji’s globe trotting golf champion, Vijay Singh and International Rugby Board referee James Bolabiu are in the race for the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) Sports Personality of the Year Award.
The duo is among nominees received from members of the Fiji media yesterday in the run to crown the best 2008 Fiji sports personality.
Singh, 45, carded an outstanding season last year winning three of five PGA Tour events late in the season including The Barclays and the Deutsche Bank Championship during the play-offs to clinch the FedExCup. He closed the December month by winning the Chevron World Challenge.
Bolabiu, on the other hand, blew his way to Fiji rugby record in the international scene.
He was the only IRB referee to officiate at all legs of the 20007-08 IRB 7s Series and the first South Pacific Islander to officiate at any Tri-Nations rugby Test between Australia and New Zealand last year.
Winning the award will make him as the first rugby referee to hoist the plaque.
The duo are in the race against local high achievers like weightlifter Manueli Tulo who competed at the Pune Youth Games in India last year, Nadi rugby coach Iliesa Tanivula, who won all 15s local rugby provincial meets and Vodafone Fiji Bati coach Jo Rabele.
The awards night will be in Suva on March 5.

Sports personality of the year? Bolabiu of course. He has brought pride and honour back to Fiji by representing Fiji at the highest level in international rugby refereeing. Well done lad.
