Fiji tourney for orphans, paralysed ruggers November 26, 2008
The Christian Rugby Mission in Fiji is organising a 10s rugby tournament with the aim of helping youths paralysed from rugby and orphans.
Kicking off on December 12-13 at the Vodafone Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori, the inaugural tournament has already attracted top teams from Suva, Nadroga and Lautoka.
“The main goal here is to aid youths that have been injured from rugby,” former Fiji rugby centre Willie Rokotuiviwa said.
“We have Ilisoni Namoro who is currently being catered for at the Tamavua Hospital. He injured his spine in 1994 and cannot walk.”
“Money raised from this tournament will go to helping make his environment easier, buy a new wheelchair and support his family.”
“Orphans will benefit from the tournament too.”
Rokotuiviwa is awaiting the president of CRM Anasa Koroitamana, a former Rewa and Fiji team mate who flies in from the United States of America soon to help coordinate the tournament.
“It’s all for a worthy cause and we have been encouraged with the response from the public,” Rokotuiviwa said.
“We’ve explained to every team that has confirmed their participation our reasons for staging this event and we have received positive feedbacks from them.”
A total of 30 teams have confirmed their participation so far including Suva teams, Lomaiviti, Army, Covenant, Davetalevu and Vatukarasa from Nadroga, Nadi Police, Waimanu and Lautoka Covenant.
“Dale Tonawai’s Army team are my favourites to win this tournament but Davetalevu too looks pretty impressive,” Rokotuiviwa said.
He added this was also a good chance for national selectors to scout local talents for the IRB 7s Series.
Registrations close on November 29 and while the organisers have set a maximum number of participants to 36 teams, they are wiling to increase that to 42 if the demand is high.
The prize money is $3000 for the winner and $1000 for the runner up.
