Rookies force their way into final 12 November 21, 2008
Fiji 7s coach Waisale Serevi has named a strong 12-member team to launch Fiji’s IRB World Sevens Series in Dubai and George later this month and early December.
Of the 12, are three debutants in Iveri Lavo, Osea Kolinisau and Peni Rokodiva, while controversial forward Setefano Cakau, William Rasileka and Watisoni Votu have been named as non-traveling reserves.
The selection of five forwards and seven backline players has kept Serevi strong minded about his team achieving their ultimate goal – winning the first two tournaments of the 2008-2009 IRB 7s series.
“I’ve selected the impact players to be part of our first assault as the first leg is very important because it determines how complete the series this season,” Serevi said.
“The good thing about the side is that it’s laced with capable players, we need not only good 7s players on the field but some player too on the bench. If we name a strong three to start in the forwards we should have another two strong players in the bench so that we maintain the momentum of the game.”
Nadroga’s halfback Emosi Vucago has been given the captaincy role while seasonal campaigner Etonia Naba was named as his assistant.
New Zealand based Rupeni Nasiga and Seremaia Burotu will add more experience to the forwards while Iliesa Ratuva’s inclusion has relegated the experienced Setefano Cakau as non-traveling reserve.
The experienced Lepani Nabuliwaqa, Vereniki Goneva and Naisa Narukutabua are expected to lead the backline while Iveri Lavo, Peni Rokodiva and Osea Kolinisau will make their first international debut.
