Northland skipper vows to defend title October 11, 2008
Northland skipper Lote Leva is ready to put his life on the line as he plans to lead by example when his side defends the coveted Farebrother Sullivan Cup against traditional folk Naitasiri at Ratu Cakobau Park this afternoon.
The solidly built winger cum loose forward who led his side to an inspirational win over Tailevu last weekend where they wrestled the cup from the same venue says his side is primed for an uphill battle against the Highlanders from the interior of Viti Levu.
“We’re certainly going in for a win,” the blindside flanker said.
“We’ve got a lot of hard work to do, but it seems to be going pretty well at the moment. Farebrother is a competition I have watched and admired and always wanted to be part of. To play in the actual competition and to defend the trophy really excites me.
“We’ve worked hard to win the Cup from Tailevu and now that we are in the ideal situation - where we are going to defend the title. We’re going up against Naitasiri with the sole aim of winning and to keep our momentum right to the end of the season.”
The Naitutu villager from Namalata in Tailevu confirmed that their line-up has been shuffled with the hope of matching the Hill men's firepower.
While he is adamant his players can keep up the rhythm, Leva said that it will not be easy going up against an experienced side.
“I’ve advised the players that we have to stay positive and they know what we need to do. We’ve put last weekend's game behind us and now we’re focusing on the upcoming challenge. We’ve been getting a lot of support from our fans and we hope that they will continue to support us in prayer.”
The 31-year-old played rugby for Tailevu North High School during his school days and while featuring for the Army club in the Northland Rugby Union club games he was named as a trialist for the Fiji Barbarians in the Pacific Rugby Cup competition.
Northland will take on Naitasiri at 3pm at Ratu Cakobau Park.
