I will be the coach: Serevi
September 05, 2008

Rugby 7s wizard Waisale Serevi has confirmed that he will sign and become the official Fiji 7s coach.

The 40-year-old rugby legend who won a honorary doctorate recently for his contribution to the abbreviated rugby code told fijilive that he will lead Fiji to the forthcoming IRB 7s Series and the 7s World Cup in Dubai next March.

“I will be the coach,” he said.

“There are some changes that I am asking from the Fiji Rugby Union. Even if it means to coach for free I will still do it because this is my country.”

“I am doing this for the people of Fiji because my heart is always for my country and its people. I feel for my people and I want to unite them again. I am a professional rugby player and I will honor Fiji by winning the World Cup and the IRB 7s Series,” he added.

The 7s maestro left the FRU worried in the past many days when he has not signed an agreement almost two months after he was given an offer letter.

FRU chief executive officer Ratu Timoci Tavanavanua confirmed that Serevi is seeking changes to the offer.

It is believed Serevi is calling for a free hand on the job with full support from the FRU, better working conditions and a longer term spanning two seasons.

The FRU is offering an eight month contract which is the duration of the IRB 7s Series which starts in November with the Dubai 7s.

Serevi and the FRU will meet next Tuesday; in the meantime, the aging maestro is expected to lead his Nasinu side in the Suva Rugby Union fixture at Albert Park tomorrow.
