U19 plays West Tigers in league build-up August 28, 2008
Fiji Under-19 rugby league team will take on the touring West Tigers side as a build-up to a curtain-raiser clash at the Rugby League World Cup in Australia.
A 20-member Fijian squad will be finalised by Friday to take on the touring Under-18 side.
The Australia curtain raiser is against an under-19 Australia selection team, comprising age group players from local clubs.
Fiji Bati head coach Jo Rabele said the U19 side would feature in the curtain raiser on November 1 before the Vodafone Fiji Bati plays France in its first pool game at the World Cup.
“The Under-19 team is fortunate to play against the West Tigers Under-18 as part of their build-up to the curtain raiser game,” Rabele said.
“This is a great opportunity for the boys as they need exposure and to blend a combination before the curtain raiser game.”
The final trial will feature Secondary School students from around Suva and Under-19 players from local clubs in the both the East and West.
“The Under-19 team featuring in the World Cup curtain raiser is another step forward in the development of rugby league because the scouts and development coaches will have access to them,” Rabele said.
The Under-19 side, which will be coached Suva Grammar School teacher Jo Savou, will take on the West Tigers in October 11 at Bidesi Park in Suva.
