Vereti Sowane scored the winning try to guide Koro to a 11-0 win over Moturiki in the Fiji Rugby Union Island Zone final at the National Stadium yesterday.
It was the try from the outside centre that led to Moturiki’s downfall.
Koro held a comfortable 6-0 lead before the breather from the boots of flyhalf Sereti Radrodro and came out strong in the dying stages of the game to keep their opponents scoreless.
Elated about the win, Koro coach Kitione Cabenatubu said his boys achieved the ultimate objective of bringing back the glory.
“The boys played well and I can say that it was a great game,” Cabenatubu said.
“We last held the Island zone title four years ago and the win is a good conclusion to our preparation. I am proud of them and hopefully we’ll try harder to progress to the next level, which is the B Division.”
After featuring in the final three years in a row, Moturiki coach Kelepi Donu applauded his team for the effort and promised they would come out strong next year.
“The boys gave their best and I think it’s back to the drawing board for us. The development of players in the island is good because it’s shown in our performance. But we need to look into the preparation so that we come back next year another step higher.”
Meanwhile, Naceva defeated Vanuabalavu 10-7 in the third place play-off.
