Caucau out, Rabuka in Pacific Islanders list
August 25, 2008

Fiji’s Rupeni Caucaunibuca is likely to miss the Pacific Islanders rugby team selection after off-the field sagas with the Fiji Rugby Union and his former France employers.

Fijilive has gathered that the star flyer’s return to international rugby might not take place as soon as he expected.

Caucau, a household name worldwide after his performances for the Auckland Blues, the Fiji side to the 2003 World Cup and his former French club Agen, is likely to miss the cut for the islander’s team, consisting of Samoa, Tonga and Fiji, in the Europe tour in November.

FRU coaching director Ilivasi Tabua will be the coach while former Fiji rugby prop and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is being eyed as team manager.

Rabuka was reportedly eyed as manager by popular demand.

“He is a very good choice. His name was nominated by the members of the Pacific Islands Rugby Association. He is a well-known personality and his involvement will help us in raising our voice against the bigger boys of rugby,” Tabua added.

Rabuka told Fijilive he was still to be officially notified by PIRA while FRU chairman Keni Dakuidreketi said an official announcement would be made next week.

Meanwhile, Caucau’s past has caught up with him again.

“He still has to show and prove himself. He is not in the 36-member team, which includes 10 Fiji reps. The PIRA board will decide on the final squad,” Tabua added.

He said players were selected after their performance in the 2007 RWC in France and this year’s Pacific Nations Cup.

Fiji reps included are those who played well during the last RWC.”

This means that Fiji captain Mosese Rauluni, Seru Rabeni, Nicky Little, Kameli Ratuvou, Sireli Naqelevuki, Timoci Nagusa, Filimoni Delasau, Seremia Bai, Sunia Koto, Netani Talei, Sisa Koyamaibole, Akapusi Qera, Semisi Naevo and Graham Dewes could earn PIRA tickets alongside players from Tonga and Samoa.

The Islanders will play England on November 8, France a week later before Italy on November 22.
