FRU president ‘won’t just be figurehead’
July 01, 2008

Ro Filipe Tuisawau has maintained that he will not stand aside and just be a figurehead for rugby union’s national body in the country.

The Fiji Rugby Union President has called for further discussions on what his role entails, saying his on view is that whoever holds the post must know what’s happening at the operational level.

Ro Filipe, who was elected earlier this year in the AGM in Lautoka by the Nadi and Lautoka Rugby Unions, said he did not like being in the dark with affairs at FRU’s Gordon Street office.

According to the constitution, the president of FRU is solely to lead the AGM.

“It's really a sort of figurehead at the moment but I have reached an understanding with the Board that I will be present at Board meetings and also have my input,” Ro Filipe said.

“It’s no use being President if I am blind and I don't believe that those who voted me in want me to be blind.”

Ro Filipe’s stand to be more involved in the day-to-day business of FRU might just help sevens maestro Waisale Serevi bid in securing the Fiji 7s coaching job.

“7s is definitely is a low point right now. Let's call a spade a spade,” he admitted.

Ro Filipe said Fiji needed a coach who understood the abbreviated code at the forefront of Fiji’s bid to retain the world cup.

“We need someone with exceptional 7s knowledge and experience and an inspirational manager who is disciplined and God fearing. We also need to assemble our best players,” he said.

Ro Filipe added that anyone was free to apply for the top 7s job.

Applications for the job closed yesterday.

“Anyone including Serevi is free to apply. I don't see any problems because at end of the day the Board will discuss and make a decision.”

He refused to say whether he had spoken to Serevi before the 7s job was advertised.

Apart from Serevi, Fijilive has been informed that Nadi coach Iliesa Tanivula, former 7s selector Manasa Bari, former coaches Peni Veidreyaki, Josateki Savou and former Guam coach Peniasi Uluiviti have also put in their bid for the 7s job.
