Former Fiji 7s rep David Batiratu who is on rugby contract in Australia could make his way into the Fiji 15s team soon if he impresses coach Ilivasi Tabua.
Tabua who is in Australia this weekend to scout for new players and overseas-based players for the forthcoming Pacific Nations Cup watched Batiratu in action for his Randwick Club against Parramatta in Sydney yesterday afternoon.
“I will be looking at some players including Batiratu and also Vitori Buatava of the Gordon Rugby Club. I will be talking to them to look at their availability,” he added.
Tabua will look at more Fijian rugby players in Australia while forming his armour for the Pacific Nations Cup and the Pacific Islanders team.
“There are a lot of players available but we will need to talk to them because of their commitments with their clubs.”
“We want to set a strong platform. We exposed a lot of local players in the Colonial and Pacific Rugby Cup. The Pacific Nations Cup is a step up and we need to have a strong base,” Tabua added.
One player that Tabua would love to rope into his team is robust prop Jerry Yanuyanutawa, a member of the Sydney University team.
Yanuyanutawa made first grade rugby competition in Sydney in 2006.
The Fijian rugger once worked as a grounds man while studying at the university to help support himself.
Fiji plays Australia ‘A,’ New Zealand Maori, Japan, Tonga and Samoa in the PNC. The tournament starts in June.
