Fiji scrapes past courageous Welsh side
March 29, 2008

The Digicel Fiji sevens team probably went through their toughest obstacle at the Hong Kong 7s to date when they were taken to the wire by a resilient Welsh side in their final pool game this evening.

While the Fijians won 15-0, their performance against the Dragons was nothing to smile about after they held a slender 5-0 at the breather.

Fiji started their campaign on a high after Ratu Naisa Narukutabua dummied his way past the Wales defence and dashed for the line for the only try in the first spell.

But the Fijian offence seemed to have fizzled out as the dominating Wales defence enveloped and foiled any attempts to spark promising moves from key playmakers Emosi Vucago and Lepani Nabuliwaqa.

A strong pep talk at the breather from coach Joe Savou seemed to have salvaged the Fijian campaign when Nabuliwaqa bumped his way to the line midway through the second spell for the shaky 10-0 lead.

Wales still stood tall in defence as desperate tackles saved them from further score line by the Fijians until replacement William Ryder weaved his way past the defence and dashed for the line.

Fiji walked away with the 15-0 to win the pool and booked a place for tomorrow’s quarterfinal showdown.
