Reconsider Serevi as coach says Usa February 10, 2008
Former Fiji sevens manager Usa Daunivalu has called on the Fiji Rugby Union to reconsider sevens maestro Waisale Serevi as coach of the Digicel Fiji sevens team.
Daunivalu made the comment after the Fijian outfit was defeated 17-21 by Pacific brothers and arch-rivals Samoa in their last pool match in Petco Park, San Diego this afternoon.
The side sealed a strong 17-0 lead in the first spell but they failed to maintain the rhythm of their performance after the breather. Fiji has been drawn against New Zealand in the quarterfinal after the Samoan ran three converted tries after the breather to keep the Fijians at bay.
“We all know that this is a relatively new side and at the moment the players are in their transition period. We should all accept the ups and downs and expect more to come but the coaches should by now know the strength and weakness of the team,” Daunivalu said.
“We need an experience playmaker and a kicker and I suggest the coach should draft experienced players in these positions. Blending the new players with the experienced ones improves the consistency of the team. The boys have shown us their skills and what they’re capable of in Dubai and George but they need good guidance from the right person. I personally suggest that FRU should bring back Serevi as coach until Joe (Savou) is more acclimatized.”
Fiji is now under immense pressure to produce the goods against New Zealand after many have questioned the sides below par performance. But this does not change Daunivalu’s high expectations as the side has felt the brunt of the rugby loving public.
“If we want our overall standing to progress this is the right time to defeat New Zealand and deny them a chance to play in the semifinal. We can do it and I have no doubt behind the teams’ effort. The loss against Samoa was a learning curve but I expect a better performance even though New Zealand is tough nut to crack.”
Fiji plays New Zealand in the cup quarterfinal at 7:28am (Fiji Time).

7s maestro Waisale Serevi's dual role as coach & player is no longer been anticipated by the FRU,he can neither play nor coach,as the FRU says he does not have that coaching class certificate to coach...Joe has, that is slap in the face for the maestro...he has contribute a lot to the country sportswise...in 7s during his primetime & as proven himself as a 'coach',Can the FRU give him another chance as technical adviser to Joe? I doubt it!!!!!! The 'no crtificate'coach [WS]has proved himself, the coach[JS] that has the required certificate...is yet to prove himself worthy of his qualification.

I think the FRU should reconsider Serevi because Fiji is still not playing with a good game plan. They've played Samoa in Wellington and they lost and in San Diego they should know their ups and downs. They had a strong start in the first half but the second half i can say was pathetic.

Fiji 7s team needs experience forwards especially during kick-offs the likes of Semisi,MVolavoa,ASatala&Vunibaka...in the backs the likes of Leps, JDaunivucu,Dels,Ryder,Bobo,Bolavucu with Caucau and Serevi as technical adviser to assist Joe, that will be the team who will bring some hope to the 7s crazy loving public.But...Jim Tavanavanua should get out first, because his differences with certain people in the 7s & 15s is affecting both codes and hurting the rugby loving public.

No offence against Savou, but Fiji should bring back the master of sevens (Serevi) to coach Team Fiji. Savou is still an apprentice, what chance has he got against the NZ coach, "NONE". Keep "Savou" as an assist to Serevi until he pass the batton on. Fiji has "The" top "Rugby Sevens Coach" in the world, sitting on the sideline being wasted. Serevi is not called the "Master of Sevens" for no reason. Use Serevi while you can, before he is gone forever. FRU you can make change, it is going to be tough but the reward is priceless.
