Youzhny into last eight at US Open
September 08, 2010

Russia's Mikhail Youzhny reached the quarter-finals of the US Open on Tuesday with a 7-5, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win over Spain's Tommy Robredo.

The 12th seed will play against the winner of the tie between Sam Querrey of the United States and Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland for a place in the semi-finals.

The 28-year-old Youzhny, the sole surviving Russian in the men's draw, grabbed the first break of serve of the match in the 11th game to take the first set.

He then had back-to-back breaks in the second to take a commanding two sets to love lead.

Games went with serve in the third set until 5-4 for Robredo when the Spaniard finally bagged a break of serve, Youzhny hitting a forehand wide on break point.

Robredo was looking the stronger going into the fourth set but it was Youzhny that made the breakthrough in the fifth game.

He set up break point with a deft backhand sliced drop shot and then cashed in when his service return clipped the net and dropped stone dead on Robredo's side.

From 3-2 up, the Russian held serve three times to advance to the last eight.

It is the second time that Youzhny has made it through to the last eight in New York following his run into the semi-finals in 2006 when he beat Rafael Nadal along the way.

Robredo was one of five Spaniards in action in the eight games comprising the top half of the draw in the fourth round.

The other four were paired in the first quarter with top seed Rafael Nadal taking on 23rd seed Feliciano Lopez and eighth seed Fernando Verdasco going up against 10th seed David Ferrer.
