Ashley Cole divorced by singer wife
September 04, 2010

The four-year marriage of England footballer Ashley Cole and his television star wife Cheryl Cole ended Friday when the High Court in London granted them a quick divorce.

Cheryl Cole, a singer in the group Girls Aloud and one of Britain's biggest television stars, ended the relationship on the grounds of unreasonable behaviour following press allegations of the Chelsea defender's infidelities.

She had said she wanted only her share of the couple's 22-million-pound (35-million-dollar, 26-million-euro) fortune in a "quick and painless" divorce.

Ashley, 29, was part of England's dismal World Cup showing in South Africa in July.

The fate of their six-million-pound marital home, south of London, remains unresolved.

Neither party was present in court for the decree nisi verdict.

Ashley Cole was due to play later in the day for England against visitors Bulgaria in their opening 2012 European Championships qualifying match.

The decree nisi is a preliminary divorce order which could be finalised within six weeks if neither side objects.

The judge held that "the respondent has behaved in such a way that the petitioner cannot reasonably be expected to live with the respondent" and that the marriage had broken down irretrievably.
