Stallions too good for Islanders, keep Cup August 28, 2010
By Torika Tokalau Ovalau had nothing on defending Farebrother champions Nadroga as their hosts ran in seven tries to one to win the first challenge 41-7 of the season at Lawaqa Park this afternoon.
Nadroga nursing their loss from last week’s Digicel Cup final to Naitasiri had their ride to defend and their reputation to protect as they dominated all facets of play, leaving the visitors pointless.
Nadroga kicked off the game with a bang, awarded with their first try just 10 minutes into the first half to Aca Ratuva. Naca Nagatalevu extended their lead by two points with his conversion.
The Stallions continued with their onslaught with four more tries to Paula Karitu, Seveci Taka, Nemani Nagusa and Joeli Lutumailagi.
It was clear at halftime with Nadroga in an extensive 31-0 lead that Ovalau was no match for the giants in Fiji rugby.
Ovalau continued to lose faith after Nadroga came back in the second half to score their sixth try from captain Tiko Matawalu just a minute after the halftime break.
Maikeli Mocetadra contributed another try for Nadroga to extend their lead 41-0 in the 51st minute of play.
Ovalau after a lot of pressure from Nadroga managed to catch their opponents sleeping to take advantage for their only seven points to Sowani Saunitoga.
Nadroga now hosts Northland in the next challenge next Saturday.
“This is the title we have left to defend so we’re going to try our best to make sure that it stays in Nadroga,” team manager, Paula Biu said.
