Wetney on fire as Solo dump Vanuatu August 11, 2010
By Reginald Chandar
Solomon Islands Futsal star Jack Wetney covered well for suspended captain Elliot Ragomo and led his side to an 8-3 thrashing of arch rivals Vanuatu at the Vodafone Arena in Suva.
The crafty player spent most time on the court to guide his young teammates in Ragomo’s absence who had to miss the match after getting double bookings.
He led by example by scoring the opening goal of the match six minutes after the opening whistle.
Micah Lea’alafa and Coleman Makau scored two more goals as Kurukuru led Vanuatu 3-0 at the break.
The floodgates opened in the second half as the Solomon Islanders completely dominated all aspects of play and often left their opponents disappointed.
Lea’alafa netted two more goals in the second spell while Wetney, Lenson Bisili and Jenan Kapu scored a goal each to give the Dickson Kadau side a 8-0 lead.
But with minutes remaining to the end of the match, Vanuatu managed to find its rhythm and score three goals.
Ben Hungai pulled two back while Nemani Roqara scored from the penalty spot to bring some respect to the score-line.
Wetney after the match thanked his team management and players for having faith in him and said he was yet to deliver his best in the championship.
“I want thank everyone for the support tonight and yeah it was tough to stand in place of Elliot but overall we did well,” he said.
“With Elliot around, we don’t need to worry much but since he was not available for this match, I was relied upon to guide the team and am glad things went on well for us.”
“The players gave their best in the match and I am very happy with the performance of the two young boys (Lenson Bisili and Coleman Makau) who played their hearts out.”
“ I am trying to lift my performance as I play more games so yeah I am yet to give my best” he quipped. Coach Makau was also full of praises for Wetney and said his experience helped him to guide the team well.
“He really stood out tonight and should great qualities of a good leader.”
“I am satisfied with our progress so far as we have three wins in the bags and have three more games remaining which are also aiming to win.”
“We are taking one match at a time and so far so good. I want to thank all the supporters for coming out in numbers and supporting the team and I wish to see this support all throughout this championship” he concluded.
Solomon Islands will take on Tahiti tomorrow at 6.30pm while Vanuatu is on a bye. Fijilive
