FASANOC's first ever chief executive officer, Lorraine Mar has called on sporting federations to raise the reputation of sports in the country away from the normal competitiveness on the field.
Mar who is the first FASANOC CEO that will also serve as the secretary general believes athletes play a much bigger role then winning and competing.
“We need to create a culture that will embrace everybody’s lifestyle,” the veteran Sports Administrator said after her appointment.
“Its more than just winning and making a name for oneself on the field or which ever sport one represents, it’s about creating a profile and living a life that is worthy of being esteemed as a role model.”
“Every athlete regardless of what sport they play is a role model and I hope that we can all work together, athletes, FASANOC and stake holders to promote a culture of good sportsmanship.”
Mar will act as CEO and general secretary for an indefinite period. She has been selected by the International Olympic Committee to be a part of 35 students from around the world to undertake studies for a masters degree in sports administration next month for a year.
“After I successfully complete my masters then I believe I’d be better prepared to fully reach my capacity as the CEO, this I could probably say is my development as CEO,” Mar said.
Mar is FASANOC’s longest serving administrator since 1988. The former Saint Joseph Secondary School student has a certificate in managing Olympic sports organizations, secretarial studies and a diploma in business studies.
She is a former Fiji tennis and badminton player and coach and has been given two awards; the IOC women of sports trophy for the Oceania in 2005 and Fiji Sports Council sportswoman of the year in 1984.
“I am really humbled and honored to fill this role,” she added.
