Four years after donning the national uniform, Fiji women’s volleyball player Torika Nuku has finally been given the captaincy role – this time to the Oceania Games in New Caledonia next week.
The 25 year old Kadavu woman from the village of Galoa was speechless when she was announced team captain but says she is more than ready to lead Fiji.
“I’ve always been in the background, listening, training and playing. I never saw myself as captain material but I thank God for this opportunity,” she said.
“This is going to be a tough competition but I know these girls, unity is our biggest strength and we are going to work everything around this.”
The side will feature in two teams, Fiji Green and Fiji Red.
Nuku will boost Fiji Red with overseas-based Anaseini Seniloli and Claire Delai. They are up against Wallis and Futuna, New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea.
Fiji Green which features several new players will face New Caledonia II and New Zealand.
“I’m focusing on the new players, I know they are nervous right now because its their first time to represent Fiji but I just want to tell them to have courage, sty focused, take in whatever they can on and off the field and enjoy the games.”
“We have four new players in the Fiji Green but the support of the old players has made my job a whole lot easier,” she added.
