Former Fiji 7s coach Josateki Savou has praised veteran sevens rep Setefano Cakau for a brilliant performance in the Adelaide 7s.
Fiji bowed out of the title contention in the quarterfinals, beaten by Australia and booted out of the tournament in the New Zealand in the plate semi final. However despite Fiji’s disappointing result, Savou said Cakau’s performance needed acknowledging.
“He played a brilliant tournament,” Savou said.
Savou who is also the coach of the Warden 7s team for which Cakau plays says he was impressed with the lanky forward's style of play.
“I was really happy with the way he played. A lot of people were throwing criticism about his selection into the team because of his age but I think Cakau has just proved himself.”
Cakau’s hard hitting and line breaking attack was responsible for several of Fiji’s tries throughout the tournament, he contributing three tries of his own. He defended well for the Fiji team and was a wander to watch when he had possession of the ball.
“When he had the ball you knew he was going to win more yards for Fiji or he was going to break our opponents’ line of defence. He really stood out in the tournament,” Savou said.
Savou added he was anticipating the Hong Kong 7s and could not wait to see Cakau in action again.
“I am looking forward to watching the Hong Kong 7s because of him. Fiji might not have done too well in Adelaide but Hong Kong is a new start for them.”
“They need to keep their heads high and focus on the game at hand, not at the games they have played,” Savou added.
