Cabinet approves convention against doping March 22, 2010
Fiji's cabinet has approved the ratification of the UNESCO International Convention Against Doping In Sports.
Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Minister for Education, National Heritage, Culture and Arts, Youth and Sports, Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment, Mr Filipe Bole.
The International Convention against Doping in Sport was developed by UNESCO and was intended for governments to adopt and implement the World Anti-Doping Code.
The UNESCO Convention promotes the prevention of and fight against doping in sport with a view to its elimination in the area of physical education and sport.
The World Anti-Doping Code, which is a framework that provides regulations regarding anti-doping across all sports and all countries, was developed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and approved in 2003.
The Minister in a government statement said whilst Fiji has signed the Copenhagen Declaration that signifies the Government’s recognition of the Code and their support to the work of the World Anti-Doping Agency, Fiji has not completed the second process, which is to align domestic policy with the Government responsibilities within the Code by becoming a State Party to the Convention.
The Minister said that upon the completion of the signing, ratification and approval process, the Department of Youth and Sports, Drug Free Sports Fiji and Oceania Regional Anti-Doping Organisation will be eligible to apply for project funding from the UNESCO Fund for the Elimination of Doping in Sport, which is available to states parties that have completed this process.
