Youth Conference hailed a success
March 22, 2010

The inaugural Pacific Youth and Sports Conference ended at the Telstra Clear Pacific Centre in Manukau on Saturday with organisers vowing to build on the success of this event for a follow-up in three years time.

"OFC has a vision to see this conference take place every three years because we believe it is important to bring together Pacific youth on a regular basis," said Franck Castillo, PYASC CEO.

OFC General Secretary Tai Nicholas says he is pleased with how the conference has gone.

“This week marks a milestone as we assemble 800 youth from 17 countries plus a variety of regional stakeholders to deliberate on one vision: building a better Pacific together,” said Nicholas.

“Under the leadership of OFC President Reynald Temarii, a number of international organisations, governments, regional partners and local sponsors have supported the event through finance and resources.

"The conference has been a great success with expert speakers, productive workshops and the ability for participants to express themselves on the sports day and cultural events each night," he said

"Moreover, the conference has provided clear outcomes and strategies which participants can take back to their countries to implement ‘Sport for development’ programmes and initiatives.”

The six-day conference involved seminars, workshops and interactive roundtables where country delegations developed action plans to take back to their region.

On Friday, delegations presented their best plan to their respective Minister of Sport.

Franck Castillo, PYASC CEO and OFC Head of Social Responsibility, will follow up each of the projects as they are implemented.
