Fiji bow out in plate semis
March 21, 2010

Fiji bowed out of the Adelaide Sevens to rivals New Zealand 24-21, in their plate semi-final fixture today.

While New Zealand march on to the Plate final Fiji will end its campaign in the Australia leg of the IRB Sevens World Series with a mere six points to add to its tally.

NZ led 19-0 at the breather before a try from Emosi Vucago put some wind into the Fijians sail.

But the Kiwis reply was quick as they penetrated a weak defence to make it 24-7.

Setefano Cakau showed individual brlliance and Watisoni Votu went in for a consolation as Fiji came alive too little to late.

Next week the Iliesa Tanivula-coached side will defend the Hong Kong 7s title.

There is hardly any improvement in Fiji's game. I think coach Tanivula has communication problems and has no game plan simply. If you look at other coaches except island ones, they seem to be in gyms with their players looking fit. I hope FRU has questions ready for the coach on his return. The only outsanding player was Setefano Cakau and you be the judge on Naba, has size but no skills what a waste, will be xtra baggage to Hong Kong. By his standard he won't get a game in HK.

I totally agree with Satish. The communication was pathetic when the ball was spread wide. Fiji should learn from Samoa. Why did Roko start ahead of Kolinasau? This is the biggest mistake Fiji makes every year which is selecting big names and not players on form. The same mistake will be done in 15s by selecting Ratuvou who is not playing in his usual fullback position for Saracens but will be the No 1 choice for the world cup. Wake up Fiji. All nations incl USA are on your tail catching up when you are falling asleep year by year.
