Hosts send Fiji to plate at the death
March 21, 2010

Fiji has been relegated to the plate competition at the Adelaide sevens after a young resilient Australian side scored a last minute try to register an impressive 26-22 win in their Cup quarterfinal showdown.

Fiji led the hosts 22-14 with a minute to the end of the game before the young Australians came back and scored two tries in the span of a minute to steal the lead.

Poor defensive play and ball retention at the kick off proved to be Fiji’s downfall in the game.

Fiji trailed the Australians 14-7 at the breather with Nasoni Roko crossing the line in the first half.

But towards the end of the first half skipper Emosi Vucago was yellow carded for a shoulder charge.

Fiji started the second half with six men and were able to send in Waisale Beci who scored a double and Setefano Cakau who was as usual hardworking in the forwards to lead 22-14 with a minute remaining.

Australia worked hard and were able to score twice to seal the win and progress to the Cup semifinals where they will face Samoa.

Samoa defeated New Zealand 19-24 in extra time after being held 19-19 at the end of their game.

Fiji faces New Zealand in the plate semifinals.

The way Fiji played from 1st day one can say that they don't have self confidence, fitness and discipline. I don't think the injured players dropped from this tournament would have made any difference. They have lost that touch of sevens and even don't have a good captain. They have to re-group and only a miracle can happen in Hong Kong.

There is NO concrete defence pattern. Players are missing and slipping off tackles especially Vucago ... need to put more effort into tackles.
