A total of nine districts will battle for top honors in the Fiji Sikh Football Association Inter District Championship which will be played from 2-4 April at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori.
The annual event will feature only one overseas team, Australia as other countries have opted to budget and prepare for the Sikh World Cup which will be hosted in Ba next year.
Defending champion Ba heads Pool B with Lautoka, Tavua and Australia while Pool A comprises of Suva, Rewa, Nasinu, Nadi and Tailevu.
Fiji Sikh Football Association national president Ajesh Singh said preparations for the tournament have been going on well and they are looking forward to some exciting competition.
“Suva is hosting the tournament this year in Nausori and so far things have been running well with the nine districts preparing thoroughly” he said.
“The main aim of the tournament is to bring the Sikh community together in a festive mood and build network amongst the members.”
“Competition will be tough as most of the teams will be laced with district players and Suva in particular will have the services of six New Zealand players.”
“Rewa which is taking part for the very first time will also be a team to watch as the side will be made up of young and promising players.”
“Apart from the tournament, the host district Suva is also organizing a social night at Tamavua Primary School on the evening of April 3” Singh added.
District reps that will be in action for the various teams include brothers Alvin and Shelvin Singh for Ba, Jalindar Singh and Nilesh Singh for Ba and Nadroga’s Ranjit Singh and former Blues ace striker Baljit Singh for Lautoka.
The fixtures of the tournament will be released later.
