Fiji 7s coach Iliesa Tanivula is not taking any risks in their hopes of winning the Adelaide 7s this weekend and has banned visitations to the team in the Land Down Under.
Tanivula wants to keep his players focused and mentally fit for the three day tournament which kicks off tomorrow and has warned officials not to allow any visitors into their camp.
“We did not do well at all in our last outing in the US 7s, the major fault being that the players were not mentally prepared for it. This is Tanivula’s ay of ensuring it does not happen again,” Jope Tuivanuavou, Fiji 7s team manager said.
“It’s not too harsh; we have had this rule in place in other outings. We respect that the players’ families and friends want to visit the team but we ask that they respect us as we try our best to win this tournament for them.”
Tanivula has stressed to the players the importance of getting the right mindset before their first pool game against Wales.
“He has been talking a lot more to individual players and together as a team. The players have responded well to this new approach – it’s the coach’s way of trying to find out what’s going on in their heads. The older players have stepped up too and offered the younger players advice that will help them in this tournament,” Tuivanuavou said.
“At the US 7s the players and coach did not communicate as much as what they have been doing this past few days. It’s healthy, very healthy because we help each other out to put us in the right mind set before the game begins.”
Fiji's opening pool game is against Wales at 9.14pm tomorrow.
