Karate campers impress in Australia March 17, 2010
Three Fiji Karate Federation elite athletes had a good outing at the open karate camp in Australia over the weekend, beating 11 teams to win the gold in the mixed team kata.
Team Fiji karatekas Jasmine Rafiq, Sandip Pala, and Pita Lenoa did Fiji proud outclassing top teams like Australia and New Zealand.
They went on to win individual events – Lenoa won silver in the senior mixed kumite and Pala won bronze in the junior mixed kumite.
Several athletes, who competed against Lenoa, are also registered for the Australian Open Karate Championship in April.
"They could've fared better, but while the other kumite athletes rested before their events, these guys were taking part and won the team kata event," FKF Team Fiji coach Lemeki Lenoa said.
"I'm happy with their performance," Lemeki Lenoa added.
The karate camp is an annual event organised by FKF's mentor coach Sensei Tony Hails. The camp is and continues to be an opportunity for FKF athletes to network and gain exposure to karate athletes, skills, and knowledge outside of Fiji.
The camp attracts a big following of karate exponents worldwide. It covers, among others, different karate styles, strengthening, training techniques, and competitions.
