Tour boss has answer to Tiger question March 15, 2010
PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem dropped a subtle hint today that he knows when Tiger Woods will return to competitive golf following his layoff after revelations of adultery.
During an interview with American television network NBC, Finchem was asked whether he could "enlighten us on when exactly" Woods would return.
It wasn’t what Finchem said, but what he didn’t say that was interesting. Instead of simply saying he didn’t know, former debating champion Finchem danced around the question without directly answering it.
"I’m as excited as everybody else to see him back this spring but my sense is we’ll know pretty soon," Finchem said.
Some media outlets, including the New York Times, have reported that Woods will not return before the Masters, the year's first major championship set for April 8-11 at Augusta National Golf Club.
Others speculate he will play March 25-28 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational PGA event at Bay Hill or a two-day exhibition known as the Tavistock Cup on March 22-23 between PGA players at rival private clubs near Orlando.
Woods has not played in four months since reports of marital infidelity surfaced shortly after he won the Australian Masters on November 15.
Last month, Woods made a public statement apologizing for his actions but did not say when he would return to competitive golf.
Tour events have been making plans for the huge number of reporters expected to attend whatever event Woods picks to make his return to the sport.
"I think if he’s going to play at the end of March, we will hear pretty soon, or early April, because he recognizes we need time to do it, although we feel like we are prepared in any particular week he comes back," Finchem said.
"But it’s going to be huge when he comes back and it’s going to be an interesting thing to watch, to see how he re-enters the game, how he plays, how he deals with the reaction to his (February) statement.
