Fiji student athletes shine in the USA
March 11, 2010

Fiji's student athletes studying at the Fresno Pacific University in the US, Eugene Vollmer and Milika Tuivanuavou have just competed at the NAIA Indoor National Championships in Tennessee and have been named NAIA All-American at the event .

Eugene competed in the triple jump and finished in a tie for second with a jump of 15.54 meters.

The jump was impressive because Vollmer had been injured for the last 4 weeks with a bad hamstring and had not been able to compete or even practice. His mark of 15.54 is a new Fiji National Record and places him second on the Fresno Pacific University all-time list.

Vollmer with now begin the second part of the season with an additional 8 meets where he is hoping to break the 16 meter mark in the triple jump and also long jump, where he is also one of the best jumpers in the nation, hoping to jump 8 meters and add another Fiji National record to his name.

Milika competed in the shot put and finished in 5th place with a throw of 14.19 meters. The throw was an 85 centimeter personal best and put her second on the Fresno Pacific University all-time list.

Tuivanuavou also qualified for the national championships in the 60 meter hurdles and pentathlon but chose not to compete in the other events.

She will use the next 8 weeks of competition will fine tune her shot put, discus, long jump, hurdles, and heptathlon as she has an opportunity to break several Fiji National records.
