Discipline a key to selection: Tanivula
March 10, 2010

Discipline on and off the field was one of the most important elements of selection into the Fiji 7s says coach Iliesa Tanivula ahead of the third leg of the 2009/10 IRB World 7s Series.

The Nadi coach said the disappointing performance at Las Vegas in the second leg had been a focal motivation to what he wanted at Adelaide and Hong Kong.

“There were a lot of elements we took into consideration but discipline was the key factor,” he said.

“We needed players that listened to us despite how much pressure was felt in the tournament if we were facing a loss.”

“These players put their hands up and I have full trust in their ability to be disciplined both on and off the field,” Tanivula added.

He admitted the number of injuries they had faced to key members of the squad had been discouraging.

“This is the main thing that we can’t change. It would have been good to have Seremaia Burotu and William Ryder back in the team but this time they get time to rest and hopefully recover in time for the final leg.”

“The boys that have been chosen have worked hard for the past 13 to 15 months, they deserve this spot. They know what is expected of them and what we are up against going in as defending champions to the Hong Kong 7s.”

He promised they had eradicated the past mistakes from Las Vegas and were focused on winning the Adelaide 7s and successfully defending the Hong Kong 7s.
