Panel of coaches for Fiji FA
March 03, 2010

The Fiji Football Association will appoint a panel of coaches for the national team and not just an individual.

This was revealed by Fiji FA president Dr Muhammad Shamsud-Dean Sahu Khan during a press conference in Suva today.

“We are looking at appointing a penal of coaches and it is highly likely the panel will comprise of locals.”

‘FIFA has made amendments to the coaching appointment requirement which sees teams having a penal of coaches rather than one full-time coach.”

“So we want to be line with the world governing body and will not hire any individual on a full time basis.”

“We have some very good locals who can do the job but there are some overseas applications already with me.”

“One of the applicants comes from Brazil. We will look at the applications after advertising it in the local dailies soon.”

“The board will sit and decide on the best candidates after going through every application.”

“We are looking at playing at least 2-3 international matches and I have advised our national team director Anil Sharma to start work on this.”

“I have asked him to submit a report detailing ideas and proposals of international matches for our national team and I can confirm that 2-3 international matches will be taking place this season” he added.

Fiji has a record of hiring and firing overseas coaches.

Uruguayan Juan Carlos Buzzetti was the last foreign coach to mentor the Fiji team. Other coaches that faced the axe included Lee Sterrey, Tony Buesnal and Les Scheinflug.

Firstly, thanks and congratulations to Dr Sahu Khan and Anil Sharma for having resolved their differences amicably in the interest of development of soccer in Fiji. Personality conflicts impede any development in any organization. Secondly, thanks to Dr Sahu Khan for the rational and timely decision to appoint a panel of local coaches for the national team. We certainly now have local talent with expertise and experience. They understand better the psyche of local players. No need to shop for overseas coaches - it's sheer wastage of time and resources. Let there be a panel on 3 coaches each in charge of technical, physical and administrative aspect of team preparation . The entire preparation including selection, administration and management of the national team be assigned to them under the jurisdiction of Team Director Anil Sharma. Give them at least three years. Hopefully there will be some progress. Best of luck Dr Sahu Khan and Anil Sharma for your serious endeavour and commitment. Santokh Singh (Toronto, Canada)
