Queries raised on Suva 7s prize money February 24, 2010
The Fiji Rugby Union has given up trying to chase the Suva Rugby Union for their prize money for winning the recent Suva International 7s last month.
Suva International 7s organisers had maintained there was no prize money for the international section of the tournament which the Fiji Barbarians won.
However, runners up Waimanu received a cheque of $500 and awaiting a further $2500 from organisers.
“The question as to why the Fiji Team was not paid should be directed to SRU instead of the FRU,” FRU chief executive officer, Keni Dakuidreketi said.
“We are flogging a dead horse here,” he added.
Attempts to get SRU chairman Vilikesa Rauca’s comments today to get clarification on why Waimanu was given their prize and the Fiji Babaas wasn’t, proved futile.
Rauca earlier this week said the winners of the international section of the tournament would only be given if they had incurred a profit.
"There was no cash prize for the international section,” Rauca aid.
“We did not announce any prize money before the tournament but only if there was a profit than the two finalists would be given some winnings,” Rauca said.
Jeremy Duxbury, an SRU executive said, “Each team manager had the Tournament Manual, a 47-page document containing the rules, regulations and detailing everything that would be provided in terms of hosting (flights, accommodation, meals, internal transport, water, balls, liaisons etc). There is no mention of prize money in this document.”
Meanwhile the tier two competition prize money totalled $12,075 – the women’s winning $750, Indo-Fijian $750 and the Under-19 walking away with $1,300.
The total prize money for the tournament was $14,875
