Gilligan disappointed with local players February 03, 2010
FIFA Futsal development officer from Australia, Scot Gilligan is disappointed with the attitude among local players towards the first Fiji team trials at the Tattersal Leisure Centre.
A total of 48 players were supposed to have tried out for a spot in the Fiji Futsal team but only 23 players showed up on the first of the two-day trials.
“Very poor, the trials were very poor,” Gilligan, a former Australia Futsal rep and coach said.
“Fiji Football is doing what they can, they can inject a lot of money into this but at the end of the day it’s the players that hold the key to Fiji’s success.”
Gilligan is on a three-week trip to conduct level one and two coaching clinics as well as help with the selection of the Fiji team.
“Fiji has the chance to qualify for the World Cup and they have a good chance to do so but the players’ attitude is really discouraging.”
Players from the west and as far as the northern division showed up to the trials, Gilligan revealing it was the players based in the central division that were a no-show.
“The players are not taking it seriously obviously. They have the opportunity but the players are not hungry enough. Fiji Football is doing all they can but it’s up to the players.”
The Fiji Futsal squad will be named by Friday to prepare for the Oceania Futsal Championship in Fiji on August.
“The attendance was disappointing but also the knowledge of the game in Fiji is poor.”
“Fiji has the talent but they lack the tactics and I am hoping players improve their attitude and try and get all the knowledge they can for this sport,” Gilligan added.
