We can’t stop code switch says Love February 02, 2010
The International Rugby League Federation and Australian Rugby League chairman Colin Love believes there is nothing that can be done to stop league players from switching to rugby union.
Love who was the chief guest at the Fiji National Rugby League Awards said it was expected that rugby league players switch to union because of the money involved in the XVS code.
“Sport is professional nowadays and players have limited careers so you cannot deny the opportunity to maximize the revenue they can get,” he said.
Love added history had proven that this migration will not end or decrease but that more league players are expected to switch to union in the future.
“A good example is Lote Tuqiri, it was disappointing to lose a player of his calibre to union but then rugby league has managed to produce talented players to replace the ones that have switched,” Love said.
“That’s just how it is – yes we lose talented players but we’ve seen great young players emerge from the ranks and that’s credit to a good development system we have in place.
“And we just keep on identifying new players every year to replace the ones that have left the code. A good example is Jarryd Hayne.”
“It is unfortunate that we see our top players leaving the sport but we are fortunate to have a great depth of talent in rugby league,” he added.
