Tulo establishes new snatch record December 15, 2009
Fiji’s top weightlifter Manueli Tulo achieved another feat in his career over the weekend when he established a new Oceania and South Pacific snatch record, with a lift of 105kg in the Pacific Cup International Tournament in New Caledonia.
The Ovalau born Commonwealth Games junior champion lifted 105kg and 125 kg in the snatch and clean and jerk respectively to break the previous snatch record of 101kg which interesting was also set by him.
Tulo also set a new total record with a combined total of 230kg.
He was very unlucky to miss 132kg clean & jerk in his second and third attempt; otherwise he would have finished up with a 237kg total. He needs 240kg to secure a medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Meanwhile, Joe Vueti and Maria Liku also produced brilliant performances in the same tournament.
Vueti broke the 300kg barrier when he snatched 130kg and clean & jerked 170kg. He narrowly missed 135kg and 175kg.
Liku also produced her personal best in the 58kg category. She snatched 76kg and clean & jerked 95kg for 171kg total, placing her number 3 in the Oceania Senior rankings and number 2 in the Oceania junior rankings.
The three are training in New Caledonia under the watchful eyes of Coach Paul Coffa.
Participating countries in the tournament included Nauru, New Caledonia, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tuvalu, Kiribati and Niue.
