Savusavu wins first leg of premier final
November 30, 2009

A goal in added time saw Savusavu registering a 3-2 win over Tailevu/Naitasiri in the first leg of the 2009 National League final at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori yesterday.

The northerners who were expected to face tough competition from the defending champions played with more vigor and composure making things difficult for the hosts.

Striker David Matavesi clinched the winner minutes after Tailevu Naitasiri leveled the match 2-2 through Ritesh Prasad.

Savusavu led the match 2-1 in normal time with goals to Johnny Singh and veteran Johnny Simpson while Tailevu Naitasiri’s goal was scored by hardworking striker Zaid Suleman.

Savusavu president Jabid Hussein was happy with the win and saluted his players for fighting till the final whistle.

“We came to Nausori without some key players who were taking part in the Sanatan tournament in Labasa but remained confident about our chances.”

“The boys played very well and did not give up even after Tailevu Naitasiri scored the equalizer in
added time.”

“We will now prepare for our home match this weekend which will be much tougher as we will be under a lot of pressure to win in front of our own supporters.”

“Tailevu Naitasiri is a very good team and they can turn the tables on us so we need to prepare for them thoroughly” added Hussein.

The second leg of the final will be played at Ganilau Park this weekend. The winner of the NEWWORLD Premier National League will also play in the Promotion Relegation series against Nasinu on a home and away basis.
