Taveuni’s Service creates NCC history November 21, 2009
Taveuni club, Service Sports has created history in the National Club Championship by becoming the first senior division club to qualify for the semifinal.
The lone northern representative in the RC Manubhai/Southern Forest NCC finals in Nausori came out strongly on Day 2 to register an impressive 4-0 victory over Lincoln and then held a star studded Wailailai Youth of Ba 1-1 in its final pool clash to book its place in the last four.
Wailailai which boasted the likes of Jone Sorolo, Shalen Lal, Shamil Rao, Alvin Singh, Rinal Prasad and Maveliko Nakama also finished its pool with four points but Service marched on due to superior goal difference.
Service which narrowly lost 2-3 to defending champion Southern Forest Combine of Navua in its opening match will take on 4R Electric of Ba in the first semifinal tomorrow morning.
4R finished Pool 1 with maximum points and looks like a team to beat in the eliminations. The team will bank on the experience of Osea Vakatalesau, Peni Finau, Ronil Kumar, Jone Vesikula, Manueli Kalou, Jone Ralulu, Aisea Codro, Josaia Bukalidi and Avinesh Suwamy to bring glory.
In the second semifinal, it will be an all Navua affair as defending champion Southern Forest Combine will face Jolly Brothers.
Combine topped Pool 2 with three clear wins while Jolly Brothers edged out Samabula of Suva in goal differential in Pool 1 to finish off as runner up to make the eliminations.
Meanwhile, two Women’s football matches will also be played tomorrow in the NCC to give more popularity and awareness to Women’s football in the country. Navua and Suva will battle it out in the first match while Nadi women will take on Lautoka in the second. The winners of both matches will clash in a curtain raiser to the main final.
The semifinals kick off at 10.30am.
