Suva out to retain Chow Games title November 20, 2009
Suva is confident of retaining both the girls and boys title of the FMF Chow Games despite facing stiff competition faced in day one.
Suva leads after day one of the competition with three gold medals, one silver and eight bronze in the boys division and the girls division with six gold medals and four silvers.
“Like this last year, after day one Suva was well in the lead. This year it’s been a bit tough, the competition has taken a whole new twist and we’re struggling to maintain our lead,” Master Own, the Suva team coach said.
Lautoka is hot on Suva’s heels in both divisions – in the boys category, Lautoka has two gold medals, four silvers and three bronze medals while in the girls category they are at second spot with four gold, two silvers and a bronze medal.
“Lautoka is our biggest threat; they have had quite a number of performances and wins their way. Even in the relay heats, they’ve really stood out and will definently pose the threat to us tomorrow.”
Owen said onus is now on their track athletes to achieve the goal of the team.
“It’s our 100m and 50m as well as our relay teams that have the weight of the team on their shoulders. Everything weighs on them to fill the void that will separate us from our threats.”
Owen praised the districts for their improvement this year, saying the officials had did a god job in bringing the competition to the bigger schools.
“They’ve really done their homework and I take my hats to them. They have created a whole new dimension of competition to this event.”
The FMF Chow Games continues tomorrow at the TFL Stadium.
