Vucago eyed for 7s captaincy role November 11, 2009
Nippy halfback Emosi Vucago is highly likely to lead the Fiji 7s team into the first leg of the 2009/10 IRB World 7s Series in Dubai and South Africa next month.
Coach Iliesa Tanivula revealed the Nadroga player was high on his list for the captaincy role.
“He has led the team in other outings and I have seen how well he commands the team. Emosi is definently at the top of the list.”
Vucago and the rest of the 18-member 7s squad prepare for this weekend’s Tavua 7s as Tanivula desperately tries to gauge their performance before the Dubai 7s on December 4.
“Right now my whole focus is getting match fitness. We got the players that took part in the Malaysia 7s joining us tomorrow so we’ll have the full team in camp. The Tavua 7s is really to gauge the team and if I am happy with what I see then it will be the last tournament before we fly off.”
Injuries are Tanivula’s biggest concern but the Nadi coach knows this is only part and parcel of the competitive sport of rugby.
“I am concerned about injuries but that’s a risk I am willing to take.”
“If it happens it happens, we just have go into the Tavua 7s with the right mindset. Getting injured is all part of the game; its physical and you have to expect it but in order to attain match fitness I have to put these boys in the front line and into tournaments.”
The 7s team underwent two training sessions today but Tanivula says he will tone it down tomorrow to just one session as they prepare for the Tavua 7s.
