Shocking wins the Melbourne Cup
November 03, 2009
Shocking won the 5.5 million dollar (5 million US dollars) Melbourne Cup over two miles (3,200 metres) at Flemington here on Tuesday.
Shocking won from Crime Scene with Mourilyan in third place.
The winner, trained by Mark Kavanagh and ridden by Corey Brown, emerged triumphant after a thrilling duel in the home straight at Flemington.
Crime Scene, trained by Godolphin's Saeed bin Suroor in Newmarket, was bidding to become the first horse trained in Britain to win the Cup.
Mourilyan was third in the event known as the 'race that stops a nation'.
Shocking was among the favourites and paid a dividend of 9.90 to punters.
But it was heartbreak for the Godolphin operation, owned by Sheikh Mohammed, whose stallion Street Cry sired the winner.
