FASANOC awaits word from CEMAG
November 03, 2009

Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee officials Vidya Lakhan and Atma Maharaj will have to wait until the end of the month to see if Fiji can take part in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India.

FASANOC president Lakhan and Secretary Maharaj were in London last week to meet the Secretary General of the Commonwealth Secretariat.

However, the response from the meeting was not what they expected as their main objective was to find a way forward for Fiji athletes to be part of the Commonwealth Games next year.

“The Secretariat said that they don’t have the power to change the decision of the CEMAG to allow Fiji to take part in the Games,” Lakhan said.

“The only group that can change the CEMAG decision is the Head of Government and this they could do in their next meeting later this month in Trinidad.”

It is very likely FASANOC will now be approaching Commonwealth Government Heads to seek their support in enabling Fiji athletes to compete in the Delhi Games before exploring other opportunities.
