Suva 7s team off to Tahiti next month October 28, 2009
The Suva Rugby Union will send a representative side next month to the Tahiti Nui 7s in Pirae, where they will be guests of the Fédération Tahitienne de Rugby as part of a 16-team international tournament.
“This is simply wonderful news,” Suva Rugby Union chairman Vilikesa Rauca said after arrangements had been confirmed.
“I’d like to thank Charles Tauziet, president of the Tahiti Rugby Union, for thinking of Suva and allowing Fiji’s oldest rugby union to be part of this prestigious tournament.”
Also taking part in the 13-14 November tournament is American Samoa, Cook Islands, New Caledonia, NZ Legends, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomons, Tahiti, Tonga, the United States, Vanuatu, and Wallis and Futuna.
The FORU teams will use the Tahiti Nui 7s as qualifiers to the Wellington, Adelaide and Hong Kong 7s, whereas Suva will be in the guest pool that will compete for a US$7,000 prize purse.
“This is a wonderful opportunity,” Rauca stressed, “as well as inviting teams from overseas to play in the Suva Rugby Festival, we had also planned to compete abroad as we strengthen ties with other rugby unions. This will be Suva’s first overseas trip since the 1995 tour to Samoa.”
The timing means the Suva 7s team will leave Fiji’s shores a few days after competing in the first of the Suva 7s Series tournaments.
The Suva 7s Series kicks off at the National Stadium in Suva on 6-7 November before moving to Lautoka on 11-12 December and Labasa on 8-9 January with a total of $45,000 prize money at stake across the three tournaments. The winners and runners-up of each tournament will qualify for the International 7s section of the Suva Rugby Festival in January 2010.
