Young Naiqama excited about debut October 19, 2009
The Naiqama brothers, Kevin and Wes are excited about they’re first outing together when they boost the Fiji Bati team in the Pacific Cup at Papua New Guinea next week.
Wes who plies his trade for the Newcastle Knights will skipper the Fiji Bati but this outing is more special to him then last years World Cup because he will have his younger brother beside him.
“It is exciting to be making my debut for Fiji. Wes played for Fiji at the World Cup and he used to tell me stories about his experience. Being selected into the team has given me a chance to experience what he did and I am loving it,” Kevin said.
The last two week camp for the Fiji Bati team at the Tanoa Hotel in Suva has bought the brothers closer in the sport they love.
“I don’t know about how anyone in my shoes would feel but I’m lapping it up. Having Wes here is a real big boost for me. He’s got tonnes of experience and always giving me advice but it’s the fact that he’s here with me and we’re going to be playing together for our country that makes it so special.”
According the Kevin, they have never played a game together in the same team.
“The Pacific Cup will be the first time Wes and I will be playing together. Its special and exciting. I know I can always rely on him.”
Kevin makes his debut in PNG, an opportunity he has sought after for a long time.
“The journeys been long and tough, not easy at all but I am so thankful to have my family supporting me. My mum has been a big support, she flew all the way from Australia to be with me when the team was named.”
“I love the Fiji team and the boys, they are all such great players with amazing personalities. I am going to cherish this debut and do my best for my country.”
When young Naiqama runs out onto the field for Fiji’s first game, he will be dedicating his debut to his older sister, Wila who passed away.
